Message from National Chair

Dear HKCBA Members and Friends:

I am very honoured and delighted to be the National Chair of the Hong Kong – Canada Business Association (HKCBA).  The HKCBA was founded in 1984 and has been chaired by several eminent persons over the past twenty-three years.  I am privileged to be in their company.

The mandate of the HKCBA is to encourage, assist and support members to conduct business between Hong Kong and Canada, through Hong Kong into China and Southeast Asia, as well as with each other here in Canada.  This role is increasingly important to nurture - while Canada and China have traditionally enjoyed excellent trading relationship, Canada can do so much more to build on this relationship.

China is a vast marketplace and a business opportunity not to be missed.  And Hong Kong is well-positioned to assist Canadian companies, particularly small and medium enterprises, to enter the Chinese marketplace.  There are many reasons to enter the greater Chinese market through Hong Kong, including Hong Kong’s position as a leading financial centre, its well-developed infrastructure and the fact that the Hong Kong and Canada share a similar legal system.

Further, the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) – a free trade agreement - which Hong Kong and China signed in 2003 offers additional opportunities as CEPA strengthens Hong Kong’s position as the most direct and cost-effective path for exporting goods into the mainland as well as providing lower entry requirements for Hong Kong service providers.  In other words, better potential to develop Hong Kong as the gateway to China.

In closing, we welcome your participation in the HKCBA through our sections across Canada and we hope to be of service in helping you develop and strengthen your trade and commercial ties with Hong Kong and Greater China.

With warm regards,

Lenore Gibson
